How long should a wedding invitation video be?

Between 20 and 45 seconds. Long enough to show the names, both families, the date and the venue; short enough that it is watched to the end on a phone. Anything past a minute gets skipped, and the details are usually at the end.

What size does WhatsApp allow?

WhatsApp caps video attachments at 16 MB, so aim to stay under about 15 MB. A 30-second invitation at a sensible bitrate lands well inside that. If yours is larger, it is almost always the resolution or the length rather than the design.

Portrait, not landscape

A wedding invitation video is watched on a phone held upright, and often posted to WhatsApp Status or Instagram Stories, so it should be portrait. A landscape video posted to Status gets letterboxed into a thin strip with black bars above and below, and the venue line becomes unreadable.

What to put on screen, in order

• The opening line: a Bismillah, an invocation, or simply "You are cordially invited".
• The names: the largest text in the whole video.
• The families: one line, in the register your family would use on paper.
• The date and time: in the numerals the language uses.
• The venue: readable at arm's length, which usually means fewer words than you want.

Why WhatsApp makes your video look worse

WhatsApp re-compresses video on send. A file that looked crisp on your laptop can arrive soft and blocky, and it is almost always the text that suffers first — thin serif lettering and fine gold detail are exactly what aggressive compression destroys.

Three things survive it reliably: large type, high contrast between text and background, and slow movement. Small text over a busy photograph is the combination that arrives unreadable.

Sending as a document rather than a video preserves the original file exactly, at the cost of losing inline playback — recipients must tap to download. For a close family group where quality matters most, that trade is often worth it.

Read it at arm's length before you send it

The single most useful test. Play the finished video on a phone, hold it where you would normally hold it, and try to read the venue line. If you find yourself squinting or bringing it closer, the text is too small — and every guest will have the same experience without telling you.

Cut words rather than shrinking type. "Grand Ballroom, Hotel Sonargaon, Kawran Bazar, Dhaka 1215" can become "Hotel Sonargaon, Dhaka" with the full address on the wedding website or the printed card.

Hold each screen long enough to read twice

The most common mistake in template-built invitation videos is text that animates in beautifully and leaves before it has been read. As a rule, a line should stay on screen long enough to read it twice at a comfortable pace — roughly two seconds for a short line, three or four for the venue and date.

Guests will not scrub back. Anything missed is missed.

Music, and why it often does not play

Many people watch WhatsApp video on mute, particularly in the evening or in company. Your invitation has to work in silence, which means every essential detail belongs on screen as text rather than in a voiceover.

If you do add music, be aware that copyrighted tracks can cause a video reposted to Instagram or Facebook to be muted or blocked. Instrumental or licensed audio avoids the problem entirely.

Sending it properly

• Send to groups, not a broadcast list, if you want people to see replies and RSVPs.
• Pair it with a text message containing the date, venue and any RSVP link, since text is searchable in a chat and video is not.
• Post it to your Status as well, which reaches contacts who never open forwarded video.
• Send the printed PDF alongside for relatives who expect a formal card.
