How long should a wedding invitation video be?

Between 20 and 45 seconds. Long enough to show the names, both families, the date and the venue; short enough that it is watched to the end on a phone. Anything past a minute gets skipped, and the details are usually at the end.

What size does WhatsApp allow?

WhatsApp caps video attachments at 16 MB, so aim to stay under about 15 MB. A 30-second invitation at a sensible bitrate lands well inside that. If yours is larger, it is almost always the resolution or the length rather than the design.

Portrait, not landscape

A wedding invitation video is watched on a phone held upright, and often posted to WhatsApp Status or Instagram Stories, so it should be portrait. A landscape video posted to Status gets letterboxed into a thin strip with black bars above and below, and the venue line becomes unreadable.

What to put on screen, in order

• The opening line: a Bismillah, an invocation, or simply "You are cordially invited".
• The names: the largest text in the whole video.
• The families: one line, in the register your family would use on paper.
• The date and time: in the numerals the language uses.
• The venue: readable at arm's length, which usually means fewer words than you want.
